We noticed that many home theaters usually mess up the position of their Dolby Atmos setup. So today, I'll take some time to show you how you can optimize your sound system that includes Dolby Atmos technology with this step-by-step guide to the best speaker configuration possible.

Although there are theorethecally an unlimited number of overhead speakers you can use (depending on the size of your cinema), we find that in private residences, the most popular is the 5.1.2 or 7.1.4 setups. While two Dolby Atmos enabled speakers will deliver a compelling experience, we recommend using four if possible. This will deliver more precisely located and realistic overhead sounds. Whichever you choose, our guide will show you the recommended placement for the best possible experience.

Note: What the X.Y.Z description means 

[X] This refers to the number of traditional surround speakers (front, center, and surround). 

[.Y] The middle number refers to how many powered subwoofers you can connect to your receiver. 

[.Z] The final number refers to how many in-ceiling or upward-firing speakers are in your Dolby Atmos® setup.

Although a 5.1.2 will do in many cases, we highly recommend you go with the Dolby Atmos 5.1.4 speaker configuration, uses four ceiling speakers, or four Dolby Atmos enabled speakers or modules.
